“Vamos por mangoneadas de Lulú,” my friends shouted as we played.
"Bote volado" in the middle of the street.
Whoever started running first had the best chance to get one, the rest, had to wait.
Summer nights in Parral are so hot and dry that we all craved something cool and tasty to refresh ourselves after running around all day.
In the summer of 1994, mi Mamá Lulú (my grandma) started making homemade mangoneadas, being the true hustler and entrepreneur she is. For most of her life, Mi Mamá Lulú owned and ran a little Tiendita from her home, where families in the neighborhood bought basic daily needs like leche, tortillas, pan, y huevos. Every day many vecinos, came and went, wishing her a, “Buenas Tardes”, or “Buenos Días, Lulú”. My grandma knows how to cook. She is famous for her tortillas de harina y frijoles de olla. It was no surprise that when she made mangoneadas, she quickly sold out. The small treats made with fresca agua de mango, frozen inside small plastic cups, and held with small wooden sticks became very popular in the barrio all year round. My grandma’s recipe is nothing far from secret, but what made her mangoneadas so unique was her ability to mix the right amount of care, agua, mangos, and azúcar. Since her freezer was very small she only made 10 at a time. The faster kids who got there first were lucky, others had to wait until the next day.
At Localeta you will not have to wait until the next day or run the fastest to try a refreshing Paleta de Mango con Chamoy. We always make sure to have enough in stock. They may not taste exactly like my grandma’s but I can assure you they are pretty close! As well, our Chamoy is handmade with only natural ingredients to prevent the much-anticipated belly aches.
