Capturing That Undeniable Perfect Bite
By Corey Nelson
Being perfect in a restaurant is hard to achieve, maybe even impossible, yet being perfect is what we strive for on every plate. One moment of perfection is when we get that perfect bite. Let’s capture that moment! You know that bite that takes you on that magical ride with all its flavors, textures, temperatures coming together, with a little bit of everything on your fork - it just hits the spot. It’s perfect. Taking a photo is a lot easier than it looks: here’s some photo basics and a pro tip to get you started!
Set Your Station
Format: This is a photo of the fork/spoon/utensil composed with a combo of elements on it. It should be posted to Instagram and Facebook.
Location: For food photography, lighting makes or breaks the picture. If possible, shoot in natural light. But if you are shooting in the kitchen, shoot in the most well lit area.
Cleanliness: Before you start taking pictures, how clean is the area you are shooting in? Remember you are showing your restaurant to the world. Is the table wiped clean? How do the utensils look? Small things like this go a long way!
Positioning: Taking a picture of the perfect bite works best when you are anywhere from six inches to a foot away from the ingredient. This will help capture the best shot possible. Remember to click on the screen to focus on the ingredient before you start taking pictures.
Presentation: When taking a picture of the perfect bite, carefully place and space bite elements onto the utensil. Try to have some of everything or at least three elements (considering colors, textures and volume of food on the utensil.
Copy: Write a few sentences on why this dish is important to you and what each element is and how it creates the perfect bite!
Here are a few pictures to give you an idea of the position and framing of the photo:

Pro Tip: When capturing the perfect bite, try and use the portrait mode on your phone to capture the perfect bite and blurring the whole dish in the background.
