The digital era has revolutionized many things. The way we shop, find information, and the way companies recruit their employees. Of course, we know of the big companies that have made a name for themselves online for recruitment such as LinkedIn and Indeed. They have been existing since the early 2000’s and most people know about these job platforms. They are known to be many companies’ go-to platforms for professional jobs. When it came to the Latino community in the US though, there was no specific website catered to Spanish-speakers who were looking for blue-collar jobs.
As an immigrant myself, I saw the struggle my family members went through when first coming to this country to find a consistent income. My dad worked many jobs from working at a bakery, to construction. My parents lacked resources, connections and knowledge, because coming to a new country in their 40’s with their 4 children to support was no easy task. My mom helped support the family by cleaning homes, which she got through asking my elementary teachers. One day as she was dropping me off at school, she told me “ask your teacher if she needs anyone to clean her home”. I then told Mrs. Reynolds in my broken English that my mom needed a job. She eventually said yes and that is how my mother began cleaning homes when we had immigrated to the land of opportunities back in 2000.
For many who come to this nation and make it their new home, looking for jobs consists of mainly “asking around” or finding out about employment opportunities through family and friends. It is also a known strategy to go into social media platforms like Facebook, post on groups about seeking a job, and hoping for the best. It is often seen these Facebook groups are constantly getting “spam” and get flooded with posts every hour, making it difficult for people to find what they are looking for, whether that is a room to rent, or employment.
During the pandemic when we saw millions of people losing their livelihood, Chamba App was created. Amongst the most affected during the COVID-19 crisis was the Latino community. We took into our hands to use technology for something useful. Why not make a mobile application that people can download directly on their phones, and seek job opportunities? We saw this need also for business owners who desperately needed workers and were struggling to find the right bilingual talent. Our biggest driving factor that keeps us going everyday is our mission to help people get back on their feet financially by facilitating the job hunting process. Our purpose with this mobile app is to combat the current unemployment rates and we are surely creating a positive impact doing so. But how are we achieving this? Chamba is a place where people have easy access to job listings in their area. We have grown over 35,000 users in our app and have created over 500 job opportunities in the Denver-metro area. Not only have we helped hundreds of people here in Colorado, but also in other states with a large Latino population like California because we are available nation-wide.
If you are reading this and want to help our mission to grow in the millions and reach every city in the nation and world, go ahead and share about Chamba App to your friends, family members or anyone you know who is looking to hire, or anyone who is looking for a job. Stay tuned, we will be a big deal in the next few years. Consistency is key and we will not stop.
