Flawless Technique
By Corey Nelson
Sometimes the most brilliant aspects of a dish happen behind the scenes, long before the plate hits the table, and your audience never gets to experience it. Let’s give them a glimpse. Check The Technique. Put it On Display. Show Off A Little. This style of content gives you a chance to show a simple or complex technique that builds rapport with you and a deeper connection to an ingredient or dish. Show your customers how good you are at your job! Filming a video is a lot easier than it looks: here’s some video basics and a pro tip to get you started!
Set Your Station
Format: This is a 15-30 second vertical video showcasing a simple or complex technique that your customers may not be familiar with, with a voiceover explaining the technique you are showcasing. It should be posted to Facebook, Instagram and Tik Tok.
Location: When making this video, the lighting and sound are crucial. If possible, shoot in natural light. But if you are shooting in the kitchen, pick the most well lit area to film in. Since you have the option to speak on the technique as you film, pick an area that has the least amount of noise. If at all possible, switch the hood off for the 30 seconds you are filming.
Cleanliness: Before you start filming, how clean is your station? Remember you are showing your kitchen/restaurant to the world. Are those towels folded in the background? Is that cutting board clean? Small things like this go a long way!
Positioning: Filming a video of the technique works best when you are anywhere from a foot to two feet away from the technique. This will help capture the perfect medium shot.
Presentation: For this video showcase the raw and real of the technique, this is the behind the scenes look of how things are prepared to get to the beautiful final dish.
Optional: Sound: When you are filming this technique, speak on what you are doing, why and how it influences the final dish.
Here are two pictures to give you an idea of the positioning and framing for this shot:

Pro Tip: Film the entire process then use different parts of the videos as well as your separate voiceover to create a more dynamic video.
